This volume examines the lives of a number of these men and women, from celebrated leaders such as Senator Thomas Hart Benton and the Reverend William Greenleaf Eliot to the thousands of Germans, African Americans, and others whose labor built the city we recognize today. Leading scholars reconstruct and interpret the world that Shaw knew in his long lifetime: a world of contention and of creativity, of trendsetting developments in politics, business, scientific research, and the arts.

Shaw’s own story mirrored these developments. Born in Sheffield, England, he immigrated to the United States in 1819 and soon moved to St. Louis. Ultimately becoming a very successful businessman and philanthropist, he was a participant in and a witness to the vast economic and cultural transformation of the city.

These libels often mixed scandal with detailed accounts of contemporary history and current politics. And though they are now largely forgotten, many sold as well as or better than some of the most famous works of the Enlightenment.

In The Devil in the Holy Water, Darnton—winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for his Forbidden Best-Sellers of Pre-Revolutionary France and author of his own best-sellers, The Great Cat Massacre and George Washington's False Teeth—offers a startling new perspective on the origins of the French Revolution and the development of a revolutionary political culture in the years after 1789. Louis Faurer was one of America's "quiet" photographers. Much of Faurer's best work, though, is of ordinary activity and people, and he frequently haunted the streets of New York, finding poetry amid the crackle of the city. In an untitled picture taken in 1937 in Philadelphia, the trousers, jacket cuffs, and cane of a seated man are in sharp focus, as are a box of pencils and a sign announcing, "I am totally blind." Hurrying past him are the blurred figures of pedestrians. Other shots such as I am Paralyzed, Daddy Warbucks, and Eddie reveal a rare social awareness.

Faurer also worked as a fashion photographer for nearly thirty years, producing work for Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, and Flair, with a particular gift for highlighting his subject's ephemeral grace. He was a lasting influence on Robert Frank and other members of the New York School of photography.

This book, the first to examine Faurer's work in depth and bring it to a modern readership, brings together a great deal of previously unpublished material, as well as images not seen since they originally appeared in magazines in the 1940s and 1950s.
